Ntataise Free State Operations

The Ntataise operations based in Rammulotsi, the township adjoining Viljoenskroon, work with pre-schools and communities in the north-west region of the Free State and in the North West province of South Africa.

Ntataise Free State offers accredited Early Childhood Development training programmes for pre-school practitioners as well as development and community outreach programmes that work directly with pre-schools, pre-school aged children, their parents and the broader community.

Accredited training

Accredited training for practitioners working in ECD centres/pre-schools has been identified as one of the crucial issues of early childhood development in disadvantaged, mainly rural areas of South Africa.

Ntataise Free State offers a full ECD qualification at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Training programmes have been designed for in-service training with short periods of intensive workshops that are interspersed with on-site, hands-on support and mentoring. These programmes are intended to address critical and scarce skills within the ECD sector.


Community outreach programmes

A significant challenge to ECD provision in poor communities of South Africa is one of access. Research shows that large numbers of children still have no opportunity to attend ECD programmes.

Ntataise’s Community Outreach Programme in the Free State comprises the Ntataise toy library based at the Ntataise training centre in Rammulotsi and two mobile playgroup units; one that operates in the township of Rammulotsi and a second that visits children living on farms in the surrounding Viljoenskroon area. The primary objective of these programmes is to increase access to play and learning opportunities for pre-school aged children not in a pre-school or home based ECD programme.


Enriching learning in the playroom

In recent years it has become apparent that few ECD centres provide an optimum learning environment for pre-school children. Practitioners working in these centres may have a qualification but often do not have the practical know-how, support or equipment to ensure good quality, consistent daily learning programmes.

The Ntataise Enrichment Programme was introduced to improve learning in the playroom for children in community and home-based ECD centres by building on the knowledge and skills gained by practitioners during their qualification training.

TThe Covid-19 pandemic has compelled us to change the way we think about how we move, work, connect, learn and play. With the closure of schools and ECD facilities in mid-March, Ntataise put a hold on our training, mentoring and development programmes.

Accelerating the Ntataise Digital Strategy

Two years ago, Ntataise developed a Digital Literacy programme with the objective to improve the digital literacy levels of Ntataise and Ntataise Network staff including Directors, ECD trainers, mentors, administration staff and ECD practitioners. This programme is central to Ntataise’s Digital strategy which aims to develop the proficiency of ECD trainers, facilitators and practitioners in the use of digital platforms for their continuous learning and professional development.
